Four years old...

To live a creative life we must lose the fear of being wrong."
- Joseph Chilton Pearce

In February I visited my grandparents in Florida. They gave me this drawing that I did when I was four. Its been a long time since I drew with the same sort of freedom that I had when I was little. I put this drawing up on my bulletin board to help remind me to be free in my art making.... something that I struggle with. Julia Denos' illustrations have a lovely, carefree quality that I am very fond of. I can't wait to get her new book, Just Being Audrey.

When visiting my grandparents I also got to look through lots of their photos that I had never seen before. Here are a few of my favorites...

This is my grandma, Lee, sitting in my grandpa's army truck that he put her name on. Romantic, no?

  2. Oh this is a wonderful post, Brooke. I hear ya, look at all the freedom that comes from within when you are young..why do we do this to ourselves when we get older? I am trying to do the same..you have such a great eye, I think you are too harsh on yourself. Your work has a lightness in heart that is fresh. I hope you know that! Love your toy illustration!! And, Julia Denos..I know, right? She's amazing. Just picked up Red Truck and The Loud Book - oh my, I love Renata's work...time for me to get back to work!

  3. You have a wonderful blog. I love the picture you did when you were 4. I have a collection of drawings from a bunch of 3-5 year olds and I always look at them for inspiration and whenever i need the motivation to draw. Oh, and i love the quote too. Very inspiring! :)
